OVERVIEW
There is little doubt that infrastructure, with astonishing speed, has become one of the hottest asset classes around. Despite its prevalence it has only recently attracted attention in the US.
In the global infrastructure market, there are several sectors which are currently generating a significant amount of headlines and activity. One of them is ports, which are benefiting from globalisation, increased trade and the emergence of the Asian economies. In addition to the seas, infrastructure investors have recently been focused on the skies. Airports are increasingly the target of aggressive bidders as passenger number increase across the globe.
As infrastructure moves from obscurity to the front pages, deals such as these are paving the way. But the asset class’ emergence is also creating significant challenges, from political pressures to an abundance of capital.
