Andrew Reicher heads the Programme Management Unit of the Private Infrastructure Development Group, a multi-donor organisation which creates, and funds activities to help correct constraints on private infrastructure investment in the world’s poorest countries (mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia). Over the past 7 years, in addition to $300m invested directly, PIDG involvement has facilitated private funds flows of over $9bn to infrastructure in these countries. He is also Chairman of the Investment Committee of Berkeley Energy’s Renewable Energy Asia Fund, a private equity investor in clean electricity generation projects, and holds a portfolio of Non-Executive Directorships in the private and not-for-profit sectors.
Andrew’s career started with 10 years in investment banking followed by over 20 years as a private equity investor – and experience of three serious recessions including the present one. In addition to capital markets and private equity, the main themes in his work have been emerging markets, especially poorer countries in Africa and Asia, creating public/private partnerships, and infrastructure. He has a track record in these fields of success in creating and re-engineering processes and devising innovative financial structures.
From 1999 to 2008, he was involved in the Commonwealth Development Corporation group (including the private equity firm Actis which was created in CDC’s privatisation process), successively as its Chief Investment Officer (chairing all the investment committees), head of its infrastructure business, and CEO of Globeleq, the wholly-owned electricity generation company operating in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The funds with which he was involved at CDC all achieved high cash multiples and rates of return. He previously worked at Citicorp and Credit Suisse.
