The PEI Turkey Forum
The inaugural PEI Turkey Forum took place on 23rd and 24th November 2009.

Turkey provides fantastic investment opportunities for private capital because of its investor friendly liberalisation, deregulation, and privatisation policies, fast growing business environment, and scarcity of capital. Deal flow quality and quantity is improving and lucrative opportunities are emerging with talented managers looking for financing.

There are also attractive consolidation opportunities developing, and local players are expecting Turkey to bounce back in 2010. Modernisation will continue with powerful fundamentals drawing investors keen to tap a young and growing population, with a strong entrepreneurial culture.

Brought to you by PEI Media, in partnership with the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA), the forum drew together senior executives from top tier firms, both international and domestic, with investment expertise in Turkey and its neighbouring countries to examine Turkey’s pivotal role in the region and the part private capital will play in building out the economy, developing real estate and infrastructure.

Just some of the testimonials from the forum:

“The PEI Turkey Forum provided the first real opportunity for the Turkish private equity industry to meet and network en masse. This exchange of ideas and contacts is vital to the growth and maturation of the market as a young generation of managers gets to learn from more experienced players. It’s a perfect one-stop shop for investors to gain a better understanding of the managers and the investment landscape.”
- Meltem Ankara, Principal Banker, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)

“The inaugural PEI Turkey Forum was a landmark event for private equity in Turkey, highlighting the exceptional investment opportunity the country offers in terms of its own market and as a gateway to the region. Actera Group is very pleased to be associated with the PEI Turkey Forum, and looks forward to continuing to be a part of it in the coming years. We thank PEI and EMPEA for organizing a great event.”
- Murat Çavusoglu, Managing Partner, Actera Group

“For NBGI Private Equity, who has stationed itself as a regional player in SEE, The PEI Turkey Forum had many crucial aspects such as an outstanding delegate mix, timely and well prepared content coupled with a satisfactory participation of around 200 delegates - not only from Turkey but from neighbouring countries from financial centers such as London and NY as well. We were proud to sponsor such a high quality event, which I believe will be a classic for years to come in regards to the PE players in Turkey, SEE and MENA regions. Please keep up the good work.”
- Mete ikiz, Investment Director, NBGI Private Equity Turkey Fund

"Turkey has the potential to be one of the more exciting private equity stories of the next decade, and yet it is only recently showing up on the radar screens of investors. That the PEI Turkey Forum attracted more than 200 of the most significant participants in the Turkish market speaks volumes to the scope and quality of this inaugural event."

Why Turkey?

“Turkey’s finances are in good shape and the country has proven its resilience during the recent global crisis. Building on their strong domestic platforms, Turkish firms have a credible shot at dominating their respective industries in surrounding markets, with considerable upside. We believe that private equity can greatly contribute to this wave of wealth creation.”

“Turkey, the gateway between the two continents of Europe and Asia, is in a prime position to take advantage of the global flow of capital to and from the East. It benefits from the stability of harmonisation with the European Union, cultural and historical relationship with the Middle East as well as the growth prospects of a young and dynamic population. Political stability and a swift recovery from the financial crisis should see this last great growth market prosper.”
Selçuk Yorgancioglu
Executive Director & Turkey Country Head
Abraaj Capital

Jose Romano “At a macro-level: strong fundamentals, a large and young population, political stability and ever increasing transparency. At the micro-level: an entrepreneurial society with sales and trading at their core; a conglomerate structure with increasing need to dispose of non-core businesses; a surge in FDI; a low cost, yet high value-added manufacturing base; a highly educated and skilled human capital - and all this with the backdrop of the EU convergence path. Istanbul is becoming a centre for PE with the PE wave in Turkey already moving and those on it having the time of their lives!.”

Serkan Elden “Turkey has a young, dynamic population with increasing purchasing power. It has an established secular culture of private enterprise. From infrastructure to industry, from agriculture to services, from banking to investments, Turkey has one of the most dynamic economies in its region. And it has substantial management depth with firms that understand the business, political, strategic and
macroeconomic dynamics in its region.”
