The PEI Islamic Alternative Assets Forum Exploring opportunities in Shariah compliant investing
20-21 May 2008

Based on the success of last year’s inaugural event, Private Equity International was delighted to announce the second running of its Islamic Alternative Assets Forum. Using feedback gathered from last year’s event and extensive research with the market, we put together a comprehensive programme which explored key issues and topics at the heart of Shariah compliant alternative assets.

“This is an event with real focus and thought leadership from the leading players in Islamic finance. In this growing part of the alternative assets industry, PEI Media has – once again – broken new ground in producing a conference that is relevant and meaningful and one which sets the standard for all those involved in Islamic alternative assets.”
- Dr Ahmed Al Jawhary, Chief Investment Officer, Venture Capital Bank

It is the only global Islamic finance event to focus exclusively on alternative assets, so was a must-attend for anyone with an interest in or curiosity about this fast-growing sector.

Appetites continue to grow for Islamic alternative assets and as these markets have developed and matured, so instruments and products have become increasingly complex. Private Equity International once again compiled a list of world class speakers, brought together for their expert knowledge and day-to-day experience of successfully working in the world of Islamic finance.

The core of Islamic finance revolves around the on-going issue of Shariah compliance and how this can impact upon an investor’s desire to commit capital to particular funds. We assembled a highly respected panel of Shariah experts who discussed not only new products on the market, but also developed understanding of how decisions on Shariah compliance are reached.

“[PEI] gathered rare expertise covering all angles of the topic. It was a great networking and informative event.”
- Khaled Hassan Rashed, CEO & Board Member, CORECAP

For those who invest in Islamic finance and alternative assets or work with either part of the industry and were keen to develop their understanding, The PEI Islamic Alternative Assets Forum was not to be missed. With it's combination of world class speakers, senior level delegates and a programme that actively encouraged interaction between both parties, attendees gained superb insight into this dynamic and increasingly topical sector.

Key topics that were discussed at the Islamic Alternative Assets Forum 2008:

  • Understanding Shariah boards and the decision making process
  • The use of Sukuks within private equity – Islamic bonds?
  • Anatomy of an investor – key drivers
  • Fundraising  - where capital is coming from?
  • Impact of the credit markets on Islamic finance investors
  • Is London the global capital of Islamic alternative asset activity?
  • New Islamically compliant instruments for use in private equity
  • REITs –are they becoming more accessible to all investors?
  • Shariah compliant fund structuring
  • Deal flow – examining the options

Other testimonials from the 2007 forum

“The quality of discussions and interaction with audience was superior to many other conferences I have attended. The key factors were the size of the audience, quality of speakers and right profile of delegates. This event highlighted not just the current topical issues but also the potential upside for private equity players in both conventional and Islamic markets. The conference dealt very effectively with topics which are otherwise not well-understood by bringing the relevant speakers together and keeping them focused.”
- Khalid Yousaf, Managing Director Islamic Finance, International Holdings Group

“PEI did a great job in assembling some of the key players in the Islamic alternative assets investment community – expert speakers, high-level content and genuine interaction with the audience. I look forward to next year’s installment.”
- Iqbal Asaria, Head of European Operations, Yasaar Group

“I thought the conference content and organisation was great and would like to thank you and your team for a job well done.”
- Zulfi Hydari, Managing Director, HBG Holdings

“Islamic investing in alternative assets is set to grow dramatically. PEI’s conference brought together the leading international players – as speakers and delegates – for a serious, informed discussion of the key issues in this area. The tight focus on alternative assets lent extra credibility and resonance to the forum.”
- Dr Humayon Dar, Chairman, BMB Islamic

“Topics discussed at the forum were very helpful for the investment management industry to formulate strategies to continue tapping into the growing Islamic investment management segment. The forum was also successful in bringing leading industry practitioners, regulators, and other industry participants to learn from each others’ experiences and perspectives.”
- Khairul Nizam, Director Technical Development, Accounting and Auditing Organisation for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI)
